🦵 Contoured vs. Universal — Which Should You Choose?

Ossur Rebound Post-Op Knee Brace contoured vs universal side-by-side comparison showing anatomical frame offset

Both versions provide the same ROM hinge technology and telescoping frame. The difference is in how the frame is shaped relative to your leg's anatomy.

The human knee is not symmetrical. A Universal brace uses a straight, symmetric frame designed to work on either leg — the most commonly prescribed option. A Contoured brace has an anatomically offset frame that mirrors the natural shape of a specific leg (Left or Right), delivering better skin contact, reduced pressure points, less brace migration, and improved hinge alignment. When in doubt, ask your surgeon or physical therapist.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What knee surgeries is the Ossur Rebound Post-Op Brace used for?
The Ossur Rebound Post-Op Hinged Knee Brace is clinically indicated for ACL reconstruction, PCL repair, MCL/LCL injuries, meniscal repairs, tibial plateau fractures, patellar tendon repairs, osteochondral repairs, condylar fractures, and high tibial osteotomy (HTO).
How long do I need to wear a post-op knee brace after ACL surgery?
Most ACL reconstruction protocols require a post-op hinged knee brace for 4–6 weeks, though your surgeon may extend this based on graft type, healing progress, and activity level. The Ossur Rebound allows your surgeon to progressively unlock range of motion as healing advances.
What is the difference between a Contoured and Universal Ossur Rebound knee brace?
Both versions use the same ROM hinge technology and telescoping frame. The Universal brace has a straight, symmetric frame that works on either leg and is the most commonly prescribed option. The Contoured brace has an anatomically offset frame that mirrors the natural shape of a specific leg, delivering better skin contact, reduced pressure points, less brace migration, and improved hinge alignment. When in doubt, ask your surgeon or physical therapist.
Can I shower or bathe while wearing the Ossur Rebound knee brace?
No — the Ossur Rebound should be removed before showering or bathing. The metal hinges and uprights should never be immersed in water. The fabric pads can be hand-washed separately with mild detergent in cold water and air dried completely before reattaching.
Is the Ossur Rebound Post-Op Knee Brace FSA or HSA eligible?
Yes. The Ossur Rebound Post-Op Hinged Knee Brace is a prescribed medical device and is generally eligible for purchase using FSA or HSA funds. We recommend confirming eligibility with your plan administrator. OrthoTape.com is an authorized Ossur dealer.
What does ROM mean on a knee brace?
ROM stands for Range of Motion. On a post-op hinged knee brace like the Ossur Rebound, the ROM hinge allows your surgeon or physical therapist to set the exact degrees of flexion and extension your knee is permitted to move. This protects the surgical repair while allowing progressive, controlled movement as healing advances.
How do I adjust the ROM hinge on the Ossur Rebound knee brace?
The Ossur Rebound uses a drop-lock hinge with adjustable flexion and extension stops. To lock the hinge at a specific angle, position the knee at the desired angle and slide the drop-lock button toward the center of the hinge. To adjust the ROM range, use the hinge dial or pin settings on each side to set the maximum flexion and extension degrees as prescribed by your surgeon.
What is HCPCS code L1832?
HCPCS code L1832 is the billing code for a prefabricated hinged knee orthosis with adjustable range of motion control. The Ossur Rebound Post-Op Hinged Knee Brace qualifies under L1832. This code is used by healthcare providers when billing insurance for a post-surgical knee brace.
How tight should a post-op knee brace be?
A post-op knee brace should be snug but not constrictive. You should be able to slide one finger under each strap. The brace should not shift or migrate when you walk. If you experience numbness, tingling, or increased swelling below the brace, loosen the straps and contact your healthcare provider.

Eazy Peazy for my Kneezy

My knee brace broke, and I was in a jam because I needed a new one ASAP after my second surgery. I'm very grateful to have stumbled onto orthotape.com! The Ossur Rebound was half the price on their site, and I got next day shipping! Ordered on a Friday and got it on a Monday. Such a relief. And the brace is fantastic! Highly recommend the website and the Ossur Rebound Post-Op.

Knee Brace

At first it was a bit challenging to apply. I practiced applying it a few times until it became easy. It feels very comfortable in comparison to others.I'm in the process of ordering the Left knee brace.

The hospital-issued brace left me with bruises

The hospital-issued brace left me with bruises on my opposite leg, disrupted my sleep, and even tore through my bed linens. This brace is a complete upgrade—lighter, more compact, and significantly more comfortable. I can finally sleep through the night, which is critical for healing. Even if you’re unsure or only need it short-term, I’d strongly recommend viewing it as an investment in your recovery. I’m genuinely glad I made the switch.

Fabulous!!

This brace was a game-changer! It was so much more comfortable and supportive than the one-size-fits-all one that was given to me in the ER. This brace is lightweight, easy to adjust, and has a slimmer profile so it's easier to wear. I love it!

Great deal

Best ever. My surgeon’s office wanted me to get this brace through their office at 1000! That’s with good insurance! We bought through you guys and saved a bundle

Timely shipping and this brace was a life saver! Had been using a rickety and cumbersome post op brace provided by the health care facility. I don’t battle with this brace, it stays put and provides the best support. I also don’t have to worry about velcro snagging my belonging! Highly recommend, well worth the price.

I can walk again

I had a total knee replacement done several years ago. After several years my knee became infected and actually went septic. Spent 4 months flat on my back clearing up the infection after they removed the replacement. Had a 2nd total replacement implanted. 2nd knee replacement failed. It would bend 90 degrees in the wrong direction causing my knee to hyperextend every time I put my weight on it. Bought several braces that all claimed to prevent hyperextension. Some much more expensive than this one. None of them stopped hyperextension. Since buying this one I've moved from a walker to just a cane and the longer I wear it the more my knee heals from going hyperextend every time I put weight on it. Hope to soon be walking again without the cane, just wearing this brace. Highly recommend it to anyone experiencing knee hyperextension.
